Assistant Principal's Report

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back from Teri and Edwina!
We've certainly hit the ground running, with Parent-Teacher Interviews, excursions and 100 Day celebrations already!
Parent Teacher Interviews:
Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who took the time to meet with our teachers and engage so positively in these important conversations. The interviews provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the Semester 1 reports that went home at the end of last term, and to collaborate on learning goals and strategies for the months ahead.
Foundation Celebrates 100 Days:
Last week, we celebrated 100 Days of School with our Foundation! Our Foundation students dressed up as if they were 100 years old, bringing lots of fun and laughter to the day. It is always a great event and a wonderful way to mark this exciting milestone in their first year of school. We loved seeing all the creative outfits and the joy they brought to students and staff.
NAPLAN Support:
We're very proud of the results, particularly in comparison to similar schools.
There is always a lot of media scrutiny surrounding NAPLAN results, as well as parent discussions about individual results. We must remember that each student's learning journey is unique, and that having just one test on a single day is only a small part of 13 years of schooling, from Foundation to Year 12.
Some students perform better than expected, while others do not. Your most valuable resource for understanding your child's ongoing learning is their teachers.
Here is a useful 3-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcYsiLtE7a8 which explains how to read your child's NAPLAN Report.
Select this link Individual student report – brochure for parents/carers (PDF 294 KB) to view the information brochure in English.
The brochure is also available in over 15 different languages at this website https://nap.edu.au/naplan/results-and-reports
For our families in Year 2 and Year 4, the 2026 NAPLAN period is between 11 and 23 March.
Stand Up Program & Communication:
At BEPS, the SUP (Stand Up Program) helps students understand social dynamics, including friendship difficulties, intentional meanness, and bullying. All students experience ups and downs in friendships; like a friend excluding someone from a game one day but joining in happily the next.
Sometimes, children are ‘mean on purpose’; while hurtful, these moments don't always count as bullying. You, as a parent or carer, play a vital role in helping your child manage these situations by listening, guiding, problem-solving, and encouraging respectful communication.
It's important that parents avoid directly intervening with other students and instead model proper, respectful behaviour. We ask all families to follow the Victorian Department of Education's Respectful Behaviours within the School community Policy, which promotes respectful and safe behaviour in all school-related interactions.
Working Together to Support Our School Team
When parents, carers, and school staff work together, students benefit and do well in their school work. Everyone—whether you're a teacher, parent, or carer—has a part to play in making school a great place to learn and grow.
The relationship between families and school staff often spans many years, which gives us a great opportunity to build strong, positive connections focused on what's best for each child. Students feel more supported, confident, and connected at school when that relationship is built on trust and mutual respect.
You might see some new posters around the school highlighting behaviours that are not okay and can negatively affect our school community. These posters are a reminder that creating a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment is everyone’s responsibility.
We appreciate your continued efforts to keep respect at the heart of all your interactions with our school team.
Term 3 Inquiry:
This term, our students will explore the past and their world through the lens of "I am an archaeologist," using curiosity and discovery to guide their learning. Predominantly under the History and Geography curriculum, students will investigate how people lived, how places have changed over time, and how human actions have shaped environments. Through our Specialist classes, students bring the past to life by creating artworks, dance, performances, and stories inspired by ancient cultures and history, and explore ways to care for Earth’s resources by delving into the past. Our inquiry approach encourages students to uncover, question, and interpret the world around them, just as an archaeologist would.
Take care,
Teri and Edwina
