Year 3 - Como House Excursion

Year 3 Archaeology Excursion to Como House

On Tuesday 29th July, students in 3D and 3S attended Como House, and on Thursday July 31st students in 3K and 3AD attended Como House for our Year 3 excursion.

During Term 3 Inquiry, students are focusing on the topic 'I am an Archaeologist'. They visited an archaeological site at Como House and worked with a trained archaeologist to explore what tools and techniques they use, how to excavate and analyse artefacts, and how to interpret their findings. They were involved in digging a site that has been recreated for a colonial era that matches the age of Como House.

This excursion covered our History Content Descriptors: Identify the features and content of historical sources, identify continuity and change, and describe the causes and consequences of change.

Please see some pictures of our excursion as well as the thoughts of our students on our two activities - surveying and excavation.

Surveying

"I really liked finding stuff in the big grass field that people used in the past. I learned that anything made by a person is an artefact." - Asher 3D

"I liked surveying because we got to put flags down whenever we found a piece of something. I found out that people in the past throw out stuff when they don’t need it and we can find them now." - Alisha 3S

"I enjoyed putting the flags in the ground where the artefacts were and drawing what it looks like."  - Adrian 3D

Excavation

"We dug in a square garden bed with soil and dirt inside. I found a thick piece of glass. We learnt that in the olden days people used to colour the glass by crushing beetles. That sounds a little disgusting to me." - Ella 3D

"I liked digging because it was fun finding things then brushing them off with a brush and shaking the extra dirt away. I learnt to be very gentle with the trowel so you don’t scoop away the tiny artefacts like plates, glass and shells." - Ruhi 3S

"I learnt that archaeologists don’t always dig up fossils. They can find old plates and coin tins." - Dhyaan 3S
