Head of Junior School

Mrs Jo Messer

As Term 2 draws to a close, we reflect on another busy and rewarding chapter in our school year. From classroom achievements and sporting endeavours to community initiatives, it’s been a term full of learning, growth, and connection. As we head into a two week break, I would like to thank our students, staff, and families for their continued support and enthusiasm. We wish everyone a safe, restful holiday – may it be a time to recharge, reconnect, and enjoy a slower pace during the break.

This Friday evening our Year 5/6 Water Polo team will compete in the semi-final of their competition, after finishing on top of the ladder at the completion of the roster. They will play South Hobart Red at 6.30 pm. If you’re looking for an action packed night of sport, head to the Aquatic Centre, as our Year 7/8 and 9/10 team are also in the semi-finals. We wish: Nate Debnam, Alex Pritchard, Lochie Johsntone, Edward Gray, Lachie North-East, James Nicholson (Year 6s), Binayak Shrestha, Chris Xavier, Harrison Siddall and Alex Sherriff (Year 5s) along with their coach, Aaron Debnam, the best of luck for Friday’s game.

Thank you to our Coaches

Thank you to all the coaches and managers of our winter sports teams. Your dedication, hard work, and support make a huge difference. The dedication to your son’s team and SVC is most appreciated.

Mid-Year Reports – Wednesday 2 July

Mid-year reports for all year levels, Prep to Year 6, will be issued on Wednesday, July 2. We encourage parents and carers to take the time to carefully read through the report, particularly the pastoral comment from your son's class teacher. This is a valuable opportunity to reflect together with your son on his achievements, celebrate his successes and discuss any areas where growth or improvement is needed. During the holiday break, I encourage you to access PAM to book a Parent Student Teacher Conference for the first day of Term 3, Monday July 21.

Mid Week Assembly Reminder

We warmly invite you to join us for our Mid-Year Assembly on Monday 30 June at 1.30 pm in the Nagle Centre of St Mary’s College. This is a special event which will celebrate the achievements and talents of our boys from the first semester.

During the assembly, students will be presented with Mid-Year Certificates from their class and specialist teachers, recognising their efforts, progress, and accomplishments across various areas of school life.

You will also be treated to performances by our Year 5 and 6 Bands and the Junior School Choir—a wonderful showcase of the musical talents being nurtured at our school.

We look forward to sharing this special occasion with you and celebrating all that our boys have achieved so far this year.

Mini Vinnies Winter Appeal – Meal Deal & Free Dress Day

Our Mini Vinnies team is kicking off this year’s fundraising with a Meal Deal and Free Dress Day to raise both awareness and support for people experiencing homelessness.

Our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase 10 polar fleece sleeping bags and 5 backpack sleeping bags to help those in need stay warm this winter.

Event Details:

🧣 Winter Woollies Free Dress Day

Students and staff are invited to wear their warmest winter clothes in exchange for a gold coin donation.

🍽️ Recess Meal Deal:

Hot Chocolate – $2.00Pancakes – $3.00How to make a Payment: Payments can be made via QKREFTPOS, or cash.

We’re also pleased to welcome Jody from St Vincent de Paul and Leanne Prichard from the TCEO, who will be joining us on the day to support our cause.

Why we need to help:

There were 122,494 people who were homeless in Australia in 2021, of those, 2350 were in Tasmania. This is the most of any state or territory.

About 20% of those were aged between 12 and 24.

Thank you for helping us make a difference!

Missing from the Music Department!

We are reaching out to ask for your help in locating a few missing pieces from our school’s music store.

  1. We recently discovered that an old and rare xylophone, made in East Germany, is missing one of its wooden bars, the ‘B’ note which is roughly 30cm long and 5cm wide.
  2. Secondly, a small metal B note from our glockenspiel has also gone missing.

These instruments are cherished parts of our collection and are used regularly by students during music lessons. Currently neither instrument can be used because of the missing note.

If you happen to come across any unusual wooden or metal pieces at home (pictured below)—perhaps brought home unintentionally by a student—we would greatly appreciate it if you could return them to the school office. Your support in helping us preserve these valuable instruments means a great deal to us and our music program.
