The Resilience Project

Throughout the school day, teachers incorporate GEM chats as a way to connect students, fostering positive mental health and well-being. These chats foster conversations and reflections on gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness, enabling students to develop a more positive mindset and better cope with challenges.

GEM chats are not only something that can be used at school, but we also encourage families to use them to ignite powerful conversations in their households, inspiring the practical application of GEM principles in daily life.

Incorporating these conversations into daily routines, such as during family dinners or car rides, can help children develop emotional awareness and resilience.

Please find below some examples of GEM Chats to use with your children.

1. Gratitude

  • "Who is someone you feel grateful for today? Tell us why."
  • "What is one thing you appreciate about your school or home?"
  • "Can you think of a recent moment that made you smile?"

2. Empathy

  • "How do you think your friend felt when they lost their toy?"
  • "If someone is sitting alone, what could you do to make them feel included?"
  • "Can you recall a time when someone helped you? How did it make you feel?"

3. Mindfulness

  • "What sounds can you hear around you right now?"
  • "Take a deep breath. How does your body feel after?"
  • "Can you describe the colours and shapes you see in the room?"

4. Emotional Literacy

  • "When you feel angry, what helps you calm down?"
  • "Can you name three emotions you felt today?"
  • "How do you express happiness? What about sadness?"

Enjoy your chats & have a wonderful weekend!
