Year 9

Western Heights College Year 9 female students making a powerful impact on their community:

WHC selected a group of Year 9 female students to mentor the Chilwell Year 6 girl cohort. The program aimed to boost confidence and show that even in male dominated settings, it is imperative for young girls to have a voice. Our Western Heights girls have stepped up as mentors to Chilwell primary girls to teach as well as to learn that their voices matter and that every one of them deserve to be heard.

Our students shared heartfelt conversations, explored social skills as well as learning to navigate difficult social situations. From breaking the ice with fun games to analysing gratitude and empathy, these sessions lead to not only the mentees gaining confidence but teaching them to hold space for themselves and create their own opportunities.

Chilwell Primary School saw a 30% increase in their AtoSS survey (the Attitudes to School surveys) results, reflecting on the positive impacts the program has made. Some of these sessions included: Meeting personal mentors, learning social skills, gratitude and empathy, learning coping skills and many other impactful life lessons.

Thank you to Miss McNamara and Jorja Mathieson, on behalf of Willow Elers (author), Angeela, Harper, Ruby, Rani, Sophie, Mia, Aurora, Amelia and Mila, for this amazing opportunity.
