From the Year 3 Classroom

We have had a wonderful start to Term 3 with students eager to get back into their learning.
We begin the term with a new text study- Yirra and her deadly dog, Demon. Students are making lots of connections, especially with naughty pets at home! We are introduced to some new Indigenous vocabulary. As we have had a long holiday, we continue to encourage building reading stamina and daily reading at home. It was great to see so many students returning their reading diaries on Friday, so congratulations to all getting back into school routine!
This term we are writing Factual Recounts, and we have been conducting research into the events that led to the creation of the Indigenous Flag. We are practising our note taking skills and organising events in chronological order.
In Inquiry we have started our new unit on Earth and Space sciences and in particular investigating facts about the sun. Next week we investigate heat energy.
In Maths we have been working on the topic Fractions and understanding that fractions represent parts of whole numbers. We will be moving on next week to Measurement with a focus on length.
Timetables Challenge
Hopefully, your child has brought home sometimes tables to practise over the past week. This is part of our ‘Year 3 Times Tables Challenge,’ designed to help students develop quick and confident recall of multiplication facts. Strong automatic recall supports learning across many areas of maths. Once your child feels confident with their current set, they can be tested by their teacher and move on to the next level. We are hoping to have some students master all 12 by the end of the year, where they will receive a prize for their hard work.
