From the Year 1 Classroom

We are full steam ahead for Term 2 and settling back into routine and school life. We have had a big focus to start the term off with our cue to attention; 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 SACRED (Teacher), HEART (children). This is being used across the whole school to create a consistent approach. The teachers had 3 big days of learning about how the brain works and learning how we can apply this in the classroom.
Literacy
Over the last fortnight, we have been enjoying learning about homophones and adding some new tricky words to our ‘Tricky Word Train’. Spelling the tricky words is really challenging and something that we are constantly practising in class time. This week we are looking at words that when the ‘y’ acts like a vowel in a word making a long ‘i’ vowel sound like in cry, dry, spy etc. We will also look at this week the trigraph ‘igh’’, which also makes the long ‘i’ vowel sound.
In writing, we are looking at Persuasive Texts. At the moment, we are writing about how we can convince Mr Mullavey to have a pet pup in the school, where we are writing an opening statement that hooks the reader in (a sizzling start) and giving reasons why we should be able to have a pup at school.
We have also been learning about the ‘Writing Process’ and working through the 5 stages to be a successful writer (Prewriting/Drafting/Revision/Editing/Publishing).
Maths
In Maths, we have been pulling apart numbers by looking at Number Bonds and different combinations we can use to make a number using a range of materials. One activity that you could be using at home is ‘Roll it, Write it and Expand it’
Roll it: Roll 2 dice. Example: 4 and 2
Write it: Make a number. Example: 42
Expand it: Say what each part means. Example: 40 + 2
Next week, we look forward to starting our Measurement topic, looking at length, mass and capacity which is always ‘hands on’ and lots of fun.
Religion
In Religion, we are learning about the story of Pentecost and talking about the Holy Spirit. We have focused on the symbols of wind and fire in relation to this story and how Pentecost is a very important story about the Holy Spirit. We want the children to understand that Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to give us special gifts, and the Holy Spirit helps us to live like Jesus.
