From the Year 5 Classroom

Welcome back to Term 2!
We hope you all enjoyed the long holiday and spending time with family and friends.
Dates for your calendar:
Friday 9th May … Mother’s Day Liturgy, Morning tea and classroom activities Thursday 29th May … Cross Country Wednesday 25th - Friday 27th June … Year 5 Camp to Ballarat
Home Reading-
REMINDER Year 5 students are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.
Literacy
This week we will finish reading our class novel, Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. Next week we begin reading its sequel, Dirrarn. The books follow Mia, a young Aboriginal girl from the Kimberley region of Australia, as she navigates cultural identity and personal growth. BlackCockatoo focused on Mia's life in her remote community, while Dirrarn will tell of her experiences at boarding school far from home. Both stories explore the importance of family, culture, and inner strength, with the dirrarn (black cockatoo) serving as Mia's totem and a symbol of her connection to her world.
Maths
In Maths we have been learning about Fractions ~ focusing on equivalent fractions, placing fractions on a number line and converting improper fractions into mixed numbers. All the Year 5s have set a personal goal, identifying an area of fractions they would like to work on.
Inquiry
We have started looking at important events in Australian history, in particular the events that led up to the Gold Rush of the 1850s and the influx of gold seekers to Victoria. We are learning about gold mining, licences, the Eureka Stockade and the rebellion of the miners in preparation for our Sovereign Hill camp in week 10. Our learning will come together over the next few weeks while we work on our gold rubric, completing activities to earn karats for our end of term auction. This will happen in the last week of term, after camp.

Our resident puzzle queen has been at it again!! Congratulations to Mira who has just completed her second 1000-piece puzzle for the year.
