Keeping Your Child Engaged in Learning Over the Holidays
The school holidays are a great time for children to relax and recharge, but they’re also an opportunity to keep learning in fun and engaging ways! Here are some simple activities to help your child stay curious and continue building their skills over the break:
Encourage Daily Reading: Reading for just 20 minutes a day can make a big difference in your child’s literacy skills. Let them choose books that interest them, read together as a family, or listen to audiobooks on long drives.
Make Learning Fun Through Games: Board games, card games, and puzzles help develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Games that involve strategy, number recognition, or spelling can reinforce learning in a playful way.
Everyday Learning Opportunities: Get your child involved in cooking, measuring ingredients, or planning meals. These activities build maths skills and encourage independence. Trips to the supermarket can also be a chance to compare prices, estimate totals, and read labels.
Explore the Outdoors: A nature walk or a visit to a local park or museum can spark curiosity and encourage questions. Ask your child to observe and describe what they see, hear, or feel—great for developing vocabulary and observation skills.
Keep a Holiday Journal: Encourage your child to write a short journal entry each day about their holiday adventures. This could include drawings, photos, or even a list of their favourite activities.
Learning doesn’t have to stop just because school is out! By incorporating simple activities into your child’s routine, you can help them stay engaged, curious, and ready for Term 2.
Well Done on a Fantastic Term 1!
As Term 1 comes to an end, I want to take a moment to express my appreciation for the warm welcome I have received from the Deer Park West PS community. From my very first day, I have been impressed by our students’ enthusiasm, kindness, and eagerness to learn. Their excited faces each morning are a wonderful way to start the day!
I have also enjoyed meeting many parents at the school gate and getting to know our families. It has been a busy and rewarding term—learning about the school, meeting so many new faces, and seeing firsthand what makes Deer Park West PS such a fantastic place to learn and grow.
I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this wonderful community, supported by dedicated staff and amazing students.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable school holiday break—I look forward to seeing you all in Term 2!
Kind regards,
