Alumni Update

We recently hosted Alumni, Terry Stephens, Class of 1993, for a lunch with our Year 12 students, followed by a motivational assembly for our Year 9s through to 12s. Terry, an Orthopaedic Surgeon with his own practice in Frankston, Victoria, shared his story and how he overcame many hurdles, to be where he is today.

Although eager to avoid becoming a shearer like his father, Terry had little idea what he wanted to do when he finished school and, despite being a talented athlete, he knew that his chances of success in that area were slim. After undertaking many years of study in the science field, Terry finally settled on becoming an orthopaedic surgeon, before going on to complete his PhD.

Included in Terry's presentation were some important points:

1. Success is derived from resilience, flexibility and a desire to achieve. Hard work is important but the more adaptable you are, the better your chances of achieving your desired result, regardless of your passion.

2. Students from small, rural public schools are already equipped for success, many just don't realise it.

3. When you do succeed, it's crucial to remember what's important, including those special people who are there not only to see your success, but also to witness you fail, before building you back up so you can try again.

4. Celebrate the big achievements but pay attention to the simple moments.

Lived experience is something money can't buy and even if students only take away one thing from this session, chances are it'll be valuable.

Thank you, Terry, for sharing not only your achievements but also your struggles. These combined have made you who you are today; someone we're proud to call an alum of BSC.

We would also like to offer special thanks to Lynelle for catering for the lunch we hosted for Terry and our Class of 2025. We're all v appreciative.
