Level 5

Welcome back to Term 2!

We hope that students and their families had a wonderful break. It is a busy and exciting term with many things happening across the school. There is a new specialist timetable this term.

Celebrations from the week

We had a wonderfully respectful ANZAC Day Assembly on Thursday 24th of April, where students learned about the meaning of ANZAC Day from Major Rick Bower. We also had the presentation of our Green Thumb badges on Monday.

Literacy

In Reading, we have been learning about literal and inferential questions and strategies for answering these. We have introduced Literacy Circles this term, where students practice the skill of reading aloud to their peers and discuss the text that they are reading to develop a shared understanding. Students had to come up with their group name, the norms that the group abides by and assign roles with the group to carry out various responsibilities.

In Writing, we have been learning about Information Reports. Students started by analysing Information Reports and discussing what they noticed as a group. After which students further examined the structure of information reports (introduction, body paragraphs with subheadings and conclusion). Next students were able to demonstrate their understanding by writing an information report on a chosen topic. Our next steps are to:

  • self-assess using a rubric and using this to identify writing goals,
  • reread and edit our writing,
  • bump up our writing using exemplars.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, we are learning about fractions, decimals and percentages, and how they are all connected. We are comparing and ordering fractions on a numberline, converting fractions to decimals and identifying percentages as quantities. Students particularly enjoyed getting out into the sunshine and working collaboratively on numberlines.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is 'Equity'. We will be covering what it means to be an Australian citizen, the process of becoming an Australian citizen, stories of those who choose to become a citizen, what our shared values are as Australians,  what it means to be a global citizen and finishing with investigating problems that we as a society are facing today.  Students will create a podcast to present their research and ideas to combat the problem.

This week in our Respectful Relationships & Friendology programs, we are focusing on positive and negative self-talk, how to recognise when we are using Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTS) and ways to focus on enabling and positive thoughts. Students explore these through acting out relevant and real-life scenarios, acknowledging any negative thoughts that we could have and how we can turn these into positive thoughts.

Homework

Students are required to:

  • Read every night and document it in their journals
  • Write out their spelling words each night and complete a spelling activity
  • Multiplication Tables worksheet
