Level 4

What a great start to Term 2 we have had! The weather has been pleasant, we’ve had a great break and everyone has returned with enthusiasm and is prepared for new learning. It has been wonderful to share all the exciting and varied things students have been doing in their holidays.

Literacy

Back at school, we’ve lost no time in getting back into the swing of things. We have been reintroduced to the Persuasive style of writing, teaching the conventions of this text type and perhaps, more importantly, encouraging students to become critical thinkers. We are asking them to consider points of view, to take a persuasive stance and using convincing facts to sway their readers.

Numeracy

In Maths, students are continuing to work with multiplication and division. They are working with the concepts of both, and learning many ways to solve problems. Many different techniques are being explored and taught to enable students to select the most efficient and effective strategies to use in the problem-solving sessions. It is great to see that students are improving their knowledge of the ‘times tables’, because an automatic response to these is of great benefit to them.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit this term has a focus on ethics, asking students to consider what is right or wrong, and exploring the things which influence our beliefs. In particular, we are exploring those things which hold true for all cultures, fundamental beliefs and values such as kindness, and treating others the way you would like to be treated. In our Reading lessons, we have been exploring this through the lens of kindness.

As part of our homework, students are asked to do 20 minutes of reading on a daily basis. All students have been given a username and password for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Please encourage your child to add books they have read to their PRC book list as they finish each book. The requirements are simple - 15 books, 10 of which must be from the PRC list and 5 which can be list or free choice books. The other parts of the homework are Maths and Spelling words.

Things to note

White T shirts for Production should be sent to school this week. Please make sure your child’s top is clearly labelled with their name.

It’s windcheater/ hoodie season coming up. Please make sure that your child has their name clearly written on the jumper so that they do not go missing.

Jump Rope for Heart will be running this term with our final “Jump Off” in July. Look out for separate news items.
