Who is Eddie Koiki Mabo?
Eddie Mabo is a indigenous Australian activist who fought for land for the Torres Strait Islander people. He was born on 29 of June 1936 at Murray island. He died on the 21 of Jan 1992 at Brisbane. From 1981 to 1984 Eddie Mabo was enrolled in an Aboriginal and islander teacher education program at Townsville College. He was married to Bonita Neehow in 1959 and had 7 kids and then adopted 3 later on.
What is Eddie Koiki Mabo known for?
Eddie Koiki Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander activist who fought for and established land rights for Torres Strait Islander peoples in the 1980s and ’90s. He is best known for his role in campaigning for Indigenous land rights in Australia, in particular the landmark decision of the High Court of Australia that recognised that indigenous rights to land had continued after the British Crown acquired sovereignty and that the international law doctrine of terra nullius was not applicable to Australian domestic law. Mabo had a profound impact on Australian history.
