English News

This term in English, Year 7 students have been diving deep into the world of poetry with the theme "Let’s Get Lyrical!" They’ve explored a range of exciting poetic forms and discovered the art of crafting words to create rhythm, emotion, and imagery.

From Haikus and Tankas to Cinquains, Limericks, Sonnets, Ballads, and Free verse, our young poets have been busy experimenting with different styles to express themselves.

The best part? Our Year 7s aren’t just studying poems—they’re writing their own! With each form they tackle, they’ve been learning to capture moments, tell stories, and unleash their creativity. Enjoy reading a few of their wonderful masterpieces.

Flood

Slowly moving downpour

Turned into mass destruction

Water everywhere

Music

Why listen to music if it makes you sad?

Happiness rhymes with happiness.

Good things don’t mix with bad.

Why do you love something that is trouble?

Does the harmony of music make you mad?

Or leave you in a misery bubble.

Look at the musical strings,

They tremble, yet sing so true.

Sorrow and joy are tightly wound things,

Melodies bind the old with the new.

Metaphor Poems

Spaghetti Bolognese

Spaghetti and sauce dinner,

Tasty.

The precious fairy hair,

Flowing rivers of red.

Multicoloured ocean,

Pasta’s silky thread.

Above the hills I see,

The steam coming from my dish,

A messy and boiling hell, that was devoured in a swish.

I’ve filled my stomach to the peak, I’m now a stuffed yeti,

But I couldn’t bare the hunger,

So, I demanded more spaghetti!

Winter

From the cold lonely days sitting in bed,

To the days where blankets aren’t quite enough.

These ice cold days are getting to my head,

I’m supposed to be at school right now, tough.

I stare blankly at the snowflakes that fall,

Whilst snuggling up in my blanket set,

Nothing on my mind, no worries at all,

But this isolation makes me upset.

The earthy aroma of rain is here,

Now the sound of quivering wind begins.

Lightning is my absolute biggest fear,

Now thunder is crashing and my head spins.

What a magical season winter is,

As it begins, it’s over in a whiz.

Tanka Poem

Snowy Days

Slippery, sad snow

Drips slowly down my window

The low sombre mood

Whirling, swirling, encircling

A day to chill and relax.

Memories - Metaphor poem

Faded, fragile photographs held close to my heart,

A treasure trove of memories all from the start,

A nostalgic whisper recreating the memory,

Neatly stacked away in my memory treasury,

Memories etched into my mind,

Remembered till the end of time.

Ballad

The Koala

In the Eucalyptus trees,

Koalas lay softly and freeze.

The whispering wind is a gentle breeze,

Dreaming deep, they sway with ease.

They call into the night,

Wanting to be held tight.

With a rustle, leaves take flight,

Within the moon’s warmth, everything’s right.

Beneath the stars, they gently sigh,

While waving bye to the bright sky.

In their world time flies by,

Koalas dream as the night rises high.

With each gentle ‘thump’ of a falling leaf,

They find their peace and sweet belief.

In the core of the forest, they feel relief,

Koalas singing, leaves you in disbelief.
