Maths News

As part of the Pi Day celebrations on Friday 14th March, a competition was held where students were tasked with estimating the circumference of a circle drawn in the quad and submitting their answers via a Google Form. The challenge required students to estimate the circumference without any tools and then round their answer in two ways: first to three decimal places and then to three significant figures. This provided an opportunity for students to apply key concepts such as circumference, rounding, estimation, and significant figures.

The solution to find the circumference of any      C = 2 x 𝝅 x radius The radius used was 2.97 m so      C = 2 x 𝝅 x 2.97         = 18.661 m to 3 decimal places (or 1866.106 cm)         = 18.7 m to 3 significant figures

After checking 111 responses  CONGRATULATIONS goes to

Hunter Jackson in Mrs Morrison's Year 8 class for his estimation of 1866.106 cm; and

Ayaan Shaikh in Mr Phillip's Year 9 class for his estimation of 1869.247 cm.

Both boys received a gift card from Kmart for their efforts! Well done boys!

A reminder that all junior classes (Years 7-10) will receive notification for their first assessment in Week 11 this term. The assessment will be held in Week 3 of next term. We wish all our senior students the best with their assessments which will be in the coming weeks.
