Together We Shine, Together We Belong
Last Friday’s assembly coincided with this year’s Harmony Day, celebrated annually on 21 March in Australia. The day holds significant importance as it promotes the values of diversity, inclusion, and respect within the Australian community. At our College, we celebrated with ‘Jersey Day’, an opportunity for students to bring in a symbolic jersey which celebrates our uniqueness. The day also aims to recognise and celebrate the cultural diversity that is a fundamental aspect of Australian society.
We are indeed a multicultural nation with people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. By focusing on unity and inclusivity, Harmony Day encourages Australians to work together despite differences. The theme of "Everyone Belongs" emphasises the importance of mutual respect and acceptance in building a more tolerant society. It encourages individuals to reflect on their behaviours and attitudes towards others from different backgrounds.
In our assembly, we had our Student Wellbeing Prefect, Patrick Bressa speak about strengthening the social fabric of the nation, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction between people of different cultures and backgrounds. Here is a short extract from his address.
Coinciding with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Harmony Day serves as a reminder of Australia’s rich cultural heritage that has shaped the nation we live in today, and it is our responsibility to ensure that every individual is valued for who they are and the contributions they bring. So today, let’s think beyond symbolism. Harmony Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a commitment—a promise to uphold inclusion, equality, and the belief that our diversity is our strength.
In summary, on this day, along with every single day, it is important that our Middle School students always reflect on their shared values of respect, kindness, and acceptance with all members of our SPC and wider community.
