Science

In the Science Room
Level 5/6 students have finished displaying and presenting a published copy of their science inquiry project to their class. Just like thier inquiry projects, there was a delightful variety of publication modes including Canva presentations, physical posters, booklets and digital posters.
Level 3/4 students have enjoyed making stop motion videos of the creation and subsequent growth of their terrariums. This was a great way to review the needs of living things and a celebration of learning. Students have now brought their terrariums home. Many of them will contain seeds which will grow into large plants and so you may like to carefully remove and replant them.
Level 2 students have continued their study of life cycles, creating posters and videos to show their understandings. many of these have been captured and uploaded to Snapper. Students have also enjoyed exploring the resources in the science room including a microscope which makes pebbles look like boulders!
Level 1 students had fun demonstrating their knowledge of the features of living things by participating in a minibeast classification activity and creating a detailed drawing of their minibeast in their science journals. Students were also surprised to learn that many of the creatures they call insects are not actually classified as insects at all!
Insects have:
- An exoskeleton
- A head, thorax, and an abdomen
- Six legs
This means spiders, centipedes, and millipeds are not classified as insects!
Prep students took the time to document their grass heads in their science journals and record what their grass head needs in order to survive. This includes air, water, food, and sunlight. Students then gave their grass heads a haircut, practicing their fine motor skills and giving them a whole new look. Most of the grass heads should have made their way home now. With your child's knowledge of living things, I hope they will continue to thrive and receive many new hair styes in the future.
Garden Club
In garden club this week we collected the last remaining tomato's from the veggie patch and removed many of the summer vines. Students also learned how to identify the weeds growing amongst the tomato vines and helped to remove them before our next round of winter planting takes place.
Until next time, remember to act like a proton and stay positive!
