Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Term 2 welcomes our Year 5/6 students into Kitchen Garden classes. Throughout the term, students will be preparing the autumn garden beds for winter planting, while also creating a variety of delicious dishes in the kitchen, with a little competition each week added in for excitement.

We will be sharing in further newsletter additions all the things we prepare and learn this term.

Visual Arts

During the first three weeks of Term 2, the students have been introduced to the artistic work of Sidney Nolan (1917–1992). Sidney Nolan studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in 1934 and 1936. He painted his most famous Ned Kelly series between 1946 and 1947. Sidney Nolan was awarded an OAM in 1983 and an AO in 1988 for his services to the arts.

Students were read the story of Sidney Nolan and how he entered the arts profession. They were shown pictures of his artwork and invited to share their opinions. Students were introduced to the three parts of a picture: the background, middle ground, and foreground.

Year 3/4 students drew the background using the three sections of a picture and used pastels and crayons to apply shading and smudging techniques. Year 1/2 students were shown techniques for tearing strips of coloured paper to represent the different sections of the background. Year 5/6 students used charcoal to sketch their own interpretation of how Ned Kelly may have looked, taking into consideration the perspective of hero or villain and the emotions this portrayal might convey.

Sidney Nolan's artwork is on display at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), and Ned Kelly's armour is on display at the State Library Victoria in the Redmond Barry Reading Room.

Performing Arts

During Term 2, students have enjoyed singing a variety of familiar songs and will be introduced to music by the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, sharing their thoughts and responses to what they hear. Students will experiment with a range of percussion instruments to develop rhythm and coordination skills. Puppetry will be a feature of this term’s Music and Drama sessions, encouraging creativity, storytelling, and performance skills. Students will participate in situational role-plays, where they will need to think on their feet and respond creatively either independently or in small groups.
