Union Action and Mid-Year Reports

At the time of publishing this newsletter, no agreement between the two parties has been reached. This information may change if the dispute is resolved.

As parents and carers know, staff at our school who are members of the Australian Education Union (AEU) have been involved in long-running negotiations with the state government and the Department of Education for improved pay and conditions. Despite an increased number of ongoing negotiations and the commencement of industrial action, including the statewide full day stop work last term, there is still no fair offer on the table to address the key issues facing public school staff. Victoria’s public schools remain the lowest funded in the country, teachers are the lowest paid, with education support staff and school leaders underpaid as well. School staff also continue to face significant workload pressures.  Staffing shortages continue to be experienced in public schools across the state.

As part of the campaign, AEU members will be taking further industrial action, including half-day stop works on a rolling, region-by-region basis. This means each school will be affected once. We understand this can cause disruption for students and families.  Staff are taking this action because they care deeply about public education and want to see our schools properly funded, and to receive fair pay and conditions, all of which are critical to a prosperous future for Victoria’s public school students.

Union members at Scoresby Primary School may stop work for half a day on Tuesday June 2nd.  We will continue to keep families informed about any action that may affect our school community.

Mid- Year School Reports - due to the ongoing industrial action, mid-year reports will be sent home with no written comments. Parents will receive curriculum progression points as required by DET with our HEART Values Personal and Social development ticks.

Updating our School Uniform Policy

Thank you to the parents who responded to our google form regarding our school uniform.  Your feedback and comments have been helpful in the review of our current policy. The policy will be presented at our next school council and available on our website shortly after.

There are so many great things about Scoresby Primary School from our people to our school facilities, our learning programs and our supportive school community. It's all here at our school!

Kitchen Garden Makeover

We are planning to makeover our Kitchen Garden and turn it into an easily accessible play space for all ability children. Currently the garden is looked after by Felicity, who does a terrific job in planning and weeding the garden beds, and classes go out and participate in simple gardening work on Tuesdays when she is here. Our students also attend to our chickens daily.

Looking forward, we want to make more use of the area and turn it into an everyday play space for imaginative play, with minimal climbing, so that it is inclusive of all children and they can easily access it.

Rowville Rotary Club and the Rowville Men’s Shed are going to be assisting us with this project, as well as our landscapers.  They will help us move the chicken coop to the back of the garden; it will still be accessible for the children but moving it will allow more play space. Rowville Men’s Shed made and installed the chicken coop at Scoresby Primary School more than 10 years ago.

The Men’s Shed are also building some shop facades, so we can create a little shopping village for our students to play in. We will be keeping some of the garden beds but adding an outdoor classroom as well.

HELP – if anyone in our community can assist us with some paving that is required to be completed before the Men’s Shed can move the chicken coop, we would be very happy to chat with you. Please see Sue if you can help.

Advertising Sign – Bunnings

We have been out and about advertising our school this year.

We have even invested in advertising on the large electronic sign -

opposite Bunnings this year, hoping to attract some more attention to our wonderful school.

Please keep an eye out for our sign next time you are shopping at Bunnings.

Scoresby Village Childcare Visit

As part of our community connections agenda, we are building relationships with our local kinders. Last week Scoresby Village Childcare brought their 3 and 4 year old group to SPS for a belated Easter activity morning.  The grade 5s came over and assisted on the morning with the younger kids.  The little ones made Easter hats, did an Easter Egg hunt and enjoyed a play in the playground and some morning tea.
