From our Foundation Classrooms

 Welcome back to a new term of learning. We are excited to share in new learning experiences. Below is an overview of student learning for the term.

Literacy

Students will continue to participate in daily, explicit literacy instruction, with a strong focus on reading, writing and oral language development

We will be using the Little Learners Love Literacy program to support early reading development. Students will:

• Learn and revise letter–sound relationships
• Blend sounds to read words and simple texts
• Develop fluency and accuracy when reading decodable texts
• Build reading comprehension by discussing texts and answering questions

Language Experience & Vocabulary

Students will engage in rich language experiences to strengthen their vocabulary and oral language. These may include:

• Trying new foods
• Participating in shared celebrations
• Engaging in hands-on classroom and community experiences, including a possible excursion

These experiences support students to:

• Learn new vocabulary in meaningful contexts
• Speak in full sentences

• Build confidence when sharing ideas

   

  A key focus will be on ensuring students understand what they are reading by

• Retelling events
• Identifying key ideas
• Making simple connections

Writing

In writing, students will:

• Create simple sentences using known sounds and words
• Learn the purpose and use of nouns (naming words) and verbs (doing words)
• Begin to organise their ideas through drawing and writing
• Develop independence in recording their thoughts

 Humanities – History (Celebrate Us!)

This term, students will explore the unit “Celebrate Us!”, aligned with the History strand of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.

Students will:

• Investigate how and why people celebrate
• Explore family traditions and cultural celebrations
• Compare similarities and differences between celebrations

We will learn about a range of celebrations, including:

• Australian BBQs
• Chinese New Year
• Christmas
• Diwali
• Rio Carnival

This unit supports students to develop an understanding of diversity, belonging, and respect for others.

Science – Weather and Seasons

Later in the term, students will begin a Science unit focused on Weather and Seasons.

Students will:

• Observe and describe daily weather conditions
• Identify patterns in weather over time
• Explore how seasons affect our environment and daily life

Students will also participate in a Mad Science incursion, where they will engage in hands-on scientific investigations to deepen their understanding.

Mathematics

Students will engage in daily numeracy lessons focused on building strong number knowledge and mathematical understanding.

Key learning areas include:

• Connecting number names, numerals, and quantities (to 10 and beyond)
• Developing accurate counting skills (one-to-one correspondence)
• Strengthening subitising (instantly recognising quantities without counting)

Students will also explore:

• 2D shapes and their features
• Measurement, including length
• Mass and capacity through hands-on comparisons
• Introduction to addition using concrete materials

 Social and Emotional Learning

Students will continue developing their understanding of emotions and wellbeing.

This term, students will:

• Learn to identify and name a wide range of emotions
• Understand that emotions are “energy in motion” and can change throughout the day
• Develop strategies to manage and express their feelings appropriately

We will also continue to build a strong sense of community by:

• Participating in activities that support Dallas Neighbourhood House
• Working alongside our School Community Hub to contribute to the Broadmeadows community and surrounding suburbs.

Home Reading

Students will begin bringing home home readers this term. Regular reading at home is essential for building confidence and fluency.

Students are expected to:

• Read every night
• Practise previously taught sounds and words

 How Families Can Support Learning at Home

Families play an important role in supporting student learning.

Literacy

• Reading with your child every night and discussing the story
• Encouraging your child to retell events from a book
• Talking regularly to build vocabulary
• Encouraging your child to draw and write simple sentences

Numeracy

• Practising counting everyday objects
• Playing games that involve recognising numbers and shapes
• Encouraging your child to explain their thinking

General Learning

• Talking about family celebrations and traditions
• Observing and discussing the daily weather
• Encouraging independence and confidence in daily routines
