Introducing The Namatjira Artisits

In Visual Arts this year we are celebrating the unique styles of The Namatjiras – Albert & his great grandson Vincent.

Both are iconic Australian Aboriginal artists in their own right.

  • Albert, renowned for his watercolour landscapes of ghost gums.
  • Vincent, his great grandson, for his humorous caricatures of well-known figures.

We will be allowing their artwork, their influences and their stories to inspire our artwork this year.

Term One Focus

For this term we have been focusing on preparing for the year:

  • Designing our folios with the word ART.
  • Drawing our 2026 self in our journals.
  • Gathering knowledge about Albert & Vincent Namatjira.

PAINT has then become our highlight and of course paint is colour. Each year level discovered new and amazing knowledge involving this exciting element.

COLOUR

Each level examined a different way to classify it:

  • Foundation: Primary and secondary colours.
  • Level 1&2: Hot and cold colours.
  • Level 3&4: Complimentary colours.
  • Level 5&6: Tertiary/tones/shades/tints.

With such comprehensive colour mixing experiences we will be equipped to create as many colours as we require.

Meet the Art Committee

It is additionally a special time for the Level 6 students who have the opportunity to be part of the Art Committee.

Our Art Captain, Eloise C was voted in after presenting a speech to the 2025 Year 4 & 5 students. She now oversees the Year 6 students who have decided to be part of our Visual Art Committee. Being part of this team allows the students to occupy the Art Studio at lunchtime where they benefit the Art Program in so many different ways. They:

  • Contribute to the design of the Journal’s title page.
  • Prepare the years’ folios.
  • Organise classes artwork.
  • Help with room clean and set up.
  • Assist with Catch Up Art at lunchtime.
  • Set up the Staff Christmas Luncheon.
  • Judge the ART FOR ALL artwork to award two framing vouchers.

All these undertakings require the students to show responsibility, accountability and teamwork. I am especially grateful for the work they do and the time they give up to help me in the Art Studio.

5th National Indigenous Art Triennial

If you happen to be in Canberra over Easter, drop into the National Gallery Of Australia to see the exhibition 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial: After the Rain.

There you will find a replica of Albert Namatjira' House made of stained glass plus other examples of his and Vincent’s works. Maybe I will see you there!
