Year 5 Spotlight

Enjoying the Senior Campus

The Year 5s have had a great start to the year and have loved being on the senior campus. As we near the end of term one, the Year 5 teachers have reflected on the efforts of students in all learning areas.

It was wonderful to see all the students doing their NAPLAN tests calmly, even though there was a hiccup at the start, our students were very patient and accommodating. Well done to all students!

Literacy

In Literacy, students have been writing narratives and persuasive texts. Students have displayed an ability to engage the reader through certain persuasive techniques and explore character, setting and storyline development. We have also explored our creative writing side by exploring and writing different types of poetry; Haikus, Cinquains and Limericks.

In reading, students have been practising their comprehension strategies during independent reading and as we read the class text, ‘Boy at the Back of the Class’. This story explores the fictional lives of young primary school aged children, who build a connection with a refugee student new to their country. The story takes the main characters on a quest to bring happiness and closure to their new friend.

There once was an old lady called Pat

The cat ate raw mice

And one day she got a pet bat

By Libby, 5A

There was once an eight-year-old cat

Who found twelve mice under the mat

He ate them for lunch

With one great big munch

And became so terribly fat.

Who dangled her hair in some stew.

And tried to flush it down the loo! :)

Who jumped off a cliff thinking OH NO!

As he fell through the air,

He started to lose a lot of hair.

He was so bald he looked like a mango!

There once was a monster named Keen.

He has a favourite colour green.

He met a big bear,

Who gave him a scare,

And is now never to be seen.

The Boy at the Back of the Class

Reflections on the Year 5 novel:

  • I felt scared for Ahmet because he had to flee his country and leave his friends and family. ~ Emilio, 5C
  • I think it’s really good. It shows how different people from different countries can work together. It shows kids having a voice. ~ Jojo, 5C
  • I like that it can be a real-life story that could be happening now. ~ Harper, 5C
  • I find it really interesting and really like the topics. I just wanted to keep reading it! I love how the main character is really nice and wants to help refugees like Ahmet. ~ Viv, 5B
  • The main characters show great respect for Ahmet who is a refugee. Some other people are not as kind. I’ve really enjoyed it. ~ Jules, 5B
  • I like the problem that the main character and her friends have to solve (helping Ahmet). ~ Django, 5D

Mathematics

In Maths, students have been revising and looking at the different strategies we can use in addition and subtraction to solve worded problems. Some of these strategies are; bridging to ten, doubles and near doubles, using number lines, the split strategy, compensation strategy and fact families. Students have also looked at different 3D shapes: vertices, edges and faces. The students also used the Australian Bureau of Statistics to access relevant data and present data in different graph and table options.

Inquiry

In our Inquiry unit ‘Economics and Business’, students have looked at needs versus wants, family budgeting and the different resources needed to produce a product. Students prepared a presentation (see the examples below) that addressed why this possible product would be needed, outlined the different natural, human and capital resources needed to produce it. Persuasive techniques came into play as groups needed to present their presentation and attempt to get the vote of their peers and ‘Shark Tank’ teachers.

  • “Our group has designed an ‘Ultimate Footy Trainer’ called Tipwiggs.” ~ Harper, Jack and Morris, 5D
  • “My group has designed a 3D printer that can also 2D print with plant fibre, it’s called the super printer.” ~ Liam B, 5D
  • “We have made the Mood-ball, it changes shape and colour to match how you feel.” ~ Sophie, 5D
