Year 4 Spotlight

A Successful & Speedy Term 1!
We can’t believe the end of term one is already here. The Year 4’s have had a positive start to the year. The Year 4 students are becoming experts at some of our daily routines such as our morning routine. We are proud of the way students are putting their bags away, getting their learning materials ready and starting their quiet reading. 4C’s class record is everyone ready by 9.05am!
Literacy
In Literacy, we have been enjoying reading our class novel ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’. The text has supported us to analyse emotive language techniques such as hyperbole and personification (see the student examples below), as well as learning new vocabulary like ‘misery’ and ‘exhilarating’.
Students have also been learning about persuasive texts and different techniques authors use to help to convince their readers. This week, the students are publishing their persuasive texts on one of the following topics:
- All families should have a pet.
- Kids should help with chores at home.
Here are some of the students' amazing introductions… we bet you want to keep on reading!
Maths
March 26th was World Maths Day, we had a maths incursion where students participated in groups of 2 – 3 to solve a variety of mathematical problems. Students were encouraged to make mistakes, discuss and solve the problems together. What a great way to celebrate World Maths Day!
In Mathematics, we have also been focusing on area and perimeter. Students have explored how shapes can share the same perimeter but have different areas. As part of this learning, they designed their own gardens with a fixed perimeter, investigating how to create both the smallest and largest possible areas.
Inquiry
This term, as part of our Civics and Citizenship unit, we have been learning about some of the features of government, the differences between rules and laws, and the roles of local government. During our Democracy, Community and Me incursion students learnt about the fundamentals of democracy. Some students stood for election in our mock classroom council and discovered how preferential voting, redistribution and absolute majorities work.
Council Candidates
As always, thank you for your support this term and we can’t wait for another successful term in term two!
