Child Safety

Child Safe Standard 1: Creating a Culturally Safe Environment
Child Safe Standard 1 requires schools to establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
While the number of Aboriginal students in our community may be small, their presence is a significant strength for our college. It serves as a powerful reminder of the thousands of years Aboriginal people have gathered on this land for celebration, ritual, storytelling and learning, and of our shared responsibility to honour that history with respect and care.
How we live this commitment at St Peter’s College
A FIRE Carrier School
As a FIRE Carrier School, our commitment to cultural safety is active and ongoing. This is reflected in regular communication and discussion through FIRE Carrier meetings, and our shared FIRE Carrier Covenant, which guides how we honour Aboriginal voices, culture and perspectives.
Staff learning and leadership oversight
All staff complete mandatory child safety training, which includes understanding cultural safety and respectful relationships. Child safety and wellbeing, including cultural safety, are standing agenda items in leadership and Deputy Principal meetings.
Visible signs of respect and inclusion
Across our campuses, cultural respect is made visible through artwork and flags that acknowledge Aboriginal heritage and connection to Country.
Learning experiences that build understanding
Students engage with Aboriginal culture through learning opportunities and excursions, including experiences that explore Indigenous knowledge, storytelling and cooking, helping students develop understanding, respect and connection.
Clear expectations for behaviour and safety
Our Behaviour Management Policy, Anti‑Bullying Policy, and Behaviour Support Grid outline clear expectations for respectful behaviour and support processes. These policies are publicly available on our website and underpin a school culture where every child feels safe, respected and valued.
At St Peter’s College, cultural safety is not an add‑on—it is an essential part of how we care for children and young people. Child Safe Standard 1 challenges us to listen, learn and continually strengthen a community where every student belongs.
