Learning & Teaching News

Excursions provide valuable learning experiences for our students. When learning outside of the classroom, students are able to see real world applications of their learning and enhance the understanding of their subject when they return to school. Recently a number of exciting excursions have taken place across the college and these are highlighted below.
VCE Media Excursion
On the 25th of March, the VCE Year 11 and 12 Media classes went on an excursion to the Story of the Moving Image and Top Screen 2026. At ACMI, we explored a range of exhibits, which made the experience both engaging and interactive. It was a fun and inspiring opportunity to experience different forms of creativity and to view high-quality student work.
One of the highlights was hearing directly from Year 12 students, who shared helpful advice and insights about the production process. This gave us a better understanding of what to expect and aim for in our own projects, making the excursion both enjoyable and educational.

VCE-VM and Applied Learning Excursions
Our Applied Learning VCE VM program has been full of engaging, real-world experiences across all year levels.
Our Year 12 students have been actively preparing for the Harmony Day Multicultural Lunch. As part of this, they visited the Immigration Museum, Travellers Bridge and Queen Victoria Market, where they explored diverse migration stories and gathered inspiration for their own recipe contributions to the Harmony Day food stalls. In addition, preparations are well underway for the V Café, which will be fully operational in the coming weeks. Run by the Year 12 students as part of their Work-Related Skills Unit, the café will open at lunchtimes during Term 3, providing valuable hands-on business experience.
The Year 11 cohort has begun planning for next term’s ANZAC Day ceremony. To deepen their understanding, students completed the 1000 Steps Kokoda Memorial Trail in Ferntree Gully and visited the Upwey RSL. There, they toured the Running Rabbits Military Museum and had the valuable opportunity to interview a veteran, enriching their appreciation of service and sacrifice.
Our Year 10 Applied Learning students have been focusing on Road Safety, including attending the Road to Zero Exhibition at Melbourne Museum. They have applied their learning by creating advertising campaigns promoting safe road use. Over the next six weeks, all Year 10 students will also participate in a mountain bike program, where they will develop bike maintenance skills, improve their riding techniques, and learn about safe riding practices. This program includes an excursion to Lysterfield Park, where students will experience a range of graded bike trails and take part in bushwalking activities. Additionally, Year 10 students attended the Melbourne Grand Prix, with a focus on career development and workplace health and safety.

PENTRIDGE PRISON VISIT
On behalf of Alexia, Mary and Eliz (Year 11 Legal Studies, Cranbourne Campus), we have written this review on our excursion to the Pentridge Prison in Coburg:
On the 13th of March, our Year 11 Legal Studies class had the opportunity to visit Pentridge Prison, which is located in Coburg. Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by a staff member of Pentridge Prison, where we learnt the history behind it. Before entering the prison building itself, we were shown late images of the original state of the prison, which allowed to visualise the hard labour and cruel circumstances the prisoners had to endure. As we walked through the prison, we were told raw stories about it, ranging from the 1850s to the late 20th century. We were able to explore the 'H division' of the prison, which is notorious for its high levels of abuse put on the prisoners. We also explored the individual cells located within H division, which included information on the type of cell, who was staying in the division, and general information about Pentridge prison. In addition, each student was given an iPod, which comprised of multiple audios regarding information about certain cells. The iPod allowed us to listen to stories relating to the prisoners who were kept in the "H division", as well as other interesting facts. Overall, this opportunity was exceedingly beneficial for us Legal Studies students, as it allowed us to understand sanctions and the legal system firsthand, through a real-life experience.
