WADL Debating Round #2
Despite the busyness of the final weeks of term – both the Novice and Senior teams were able to get together to prepare for their 2nd debates of the WADL Debating season.
This time, the Trinity College Novice Team was comprised of newcomer Daniel Patrick (7.1) and returning debaters Archie Turner (7.8) and Nolan Morch (7.1). Taking on debaters from Perth Modern School – our boys argued in the Negative on the topic “This house believes that space exploration is more important than exploring Earth’s oceans.” With the guidance of their Year 9 debating big brothers and very careful preparation and research on their part – the boys spoke with confidence and offered thoughtful rebuttals throughout the evening which eventually resulted in a win for the Trinity team. With two wins now and the impromptu rounds starting next term – we look forward to continued success with this Novice team!
Later that evening, the Trinity College Senior Team made their first foray into the WADL Debating Competition after having 2 weeks off – preparing speeches for the Negative side on the topic “This house supports the Neo-Luddite movement.” With experienced debater Bowie McCabe (12.7) ably supporting his teammates Edward Mclean (11.6) and Stefan Veselinovic (11.6) in preparing for this – the boys arrived at Perth Modern School ready to rumble.
Unfortunately, due to a scheduling error – the boys didn’t have a team to debate with on the night but were instead treated to a debating masterclass as several of the WADL adjudicators worked to prepare speeches on the same topic within the hour and then debated the boys as the Affirmative team. Solid points were provided from either side and laughs enjoyed by both teams as Ed, Stefan and Bowie fought valiantly to offer points of information and rebuttals against their opposition. It was an exciting and wonderful way to end the evening, and our Senior students left with more hints and tips on how to maximise their debating skills over the coming weeks.
We pause now for the Easter break and look forward to all our debaters returning with renewed vigour, ready for the impromptu rounds in Term 2.
