ILLEGAL E-BIKES

In recent weeks, local police have contacted the school to advise that a number of our students have been identified riding e-bikes that do not meet legal requirements. This is a growing concern across Victoria and one that primarily relates to student safety.

While e-bikes can be a convenient way for students to travel to and from school, not all devices marketed as “e-bikes” are legally permitted. Some models are classified as motorbikes due to their power or design and require registration and a licensed rider. Others have been modified in ways that make them unsafe and unlawful for road or footpath use.

Our primary concern is the wellbeing of our students. High-powered or modified e-bikes can significantly increase the risk of serious injury, particularly when used without appropriate protective equipment or in shared pedestrian areas. We are also mindful that students may not always be aware of the legal distinctions or the potential consequences.

We ask parents and caregivers to:

• Check that any e-bike your child is using complies with Victorian regulations (including power limits and speed restrictions).

• Ensure that helmets are worn at all times.

• Reinforce safe riding practices, including awareness of pedestrians and road rules.

• Be aware that riding an illegal or non-compliant e-bike may result in police action, including fines.
