Principal's Blog

7th September, 2023

Dear Parents, Carers, Students, Staff and Friends of Derinya,

Oh what a night! Last night’s Junior Production of Movie Marathon was absolutely outstanding. The students did so well containing their nerves, getting up there on stage singing and dancing their hearts out. We are so fortunate at our school to have the very talented Mrs Morrison and Mrs Morgan who bring the show together each year. It was great to see the stadium full of supportive family members, cheering our youngest students along.

Book Fair

Our Book Fair will be running all next week. It will be located in Ms Grostate's classroom in the main administration building every morning next week from 8:15-9am and Monday-Thursday afternoon straight after school until 4:15pm. Cash and EFTPOS facilities will be available. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

R U OK Day

R U OK Day is next Thursday 14th September and we invite all students to wear a touch of yellow in support of this and to bring a gold coin donation that will go to mental health awareness.

Footy Day

Next Friday we have our annual footy day event and final assembly for the term. Our footy themed DKD will also be held on this day.

Professional Development

On Wednesday we were supported by Paul Zappa, lead educator for the Respectful Relationships Initiative. Paul came along and talked to us about topics 7 & 8 of the RR curriculum which centre around identify and violence. Not only is the identity piece important for developing a sense of awareness and acceptance of individual differences but it is also a vehicle to support protective behaviours in children. Discussions around violence were also important focusing on the effects of power and control in relationships and how we can explicitly teach this content in a developmentally appropriate manner. Please know that this is a mandated curriculum in all Victorian schools and follows six well planned and sequenced topics around social and emotional learning. The topics are repeated across the F-10 curriculum and builds from one year to the next. If you have any concerns or questions about the content  please reach out to your child’s teacher or Mrs Nikki Trevaskis who is leading this implementation at our school. Nikki can be contacted at Nicole.Trevaskis@education.vic.gov.au

Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend ahead.

Kind Regards,

Nadine
