Celebrating Book Week

Each year across Australia, The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together celebrating ‘Children’s Book Week’. During this time, schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children's literature.

The theme for this year is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’. In 1946 The Children's Book Council of Australia established an annual book award to promote children's books of high literary and artistic quality. These awards are now the most influential and highly respected in Australia. The winning books will be announced on Friday 18 August.

Over Term 2 and 3, students have been sharing the shortlisted books and working on responding to texts during library time. In the weeks leading up to Book Week students entered voluntarily into Book Week competitions which are now on display in our school hall for parents to view following our Book Week Parade on Friday.

Monday and Tuesday 21 & 22 August

Students participated in an  immersive story experience in the library. During these visits, students stepped inside one of the shortlisted titles and experienced the world of those characters.

Thursday 24 August, Buddy Reading & DEAR (Drop Everything And Read)

Students and staff spent 20 minutes immersed in reading.

DEAR was followed by The Reading Garden at  lunchtime in the Adventure Playground space.

Tomorrow,  Friday  25 August,  we look forward to students and preschoolers dressing  up as their favourite book character and joining in the GRAND BOOK WEEK PARADE. Dress up as a book that helped you grow your love of reading! All parents and friends are invited to the book week parade starting at 9:15am on the Grass Area.  Entry and exit will be via the Park Road Hall Gates.

Next week, WEDNESDAY 30 AUGUST, we welcome Perform Education. They are visiting to perform their ‘Way Too Cool Book Week Show’ - Read Grow Inspire.

Thank you to all who entered the SJB Book Week Competitions. Winners will be announced tomorrow.

Thank you to all for the energy, enthusiasm and love of literature celebrated and shared this week and always at SJB. A special thank you to Mrs Pirie and her trusted team for their endless creativity in coordinating this event for all.

How does my child receive a Principal's Award?

Class teachers nominate students for Blue Merit Awards which are presented at the weekly assembly.  When five Blue Merit Awards have been received, students send them to the school office to be recorded and are then eligible for a Principal’s Award. When students attain their 4th Principal Award, they are awarded a Principal’s Medallion at an assembly. End of Term awards can be included as part of the 5 awards.
