In Mathematics students explored fractions and decimals, finding equivalent forms and making connections between them. They compared and ordered fractions using their understanding of factors and multiples, and represented common fractions on a number line. In the Time unit, students solved real-world problems involving duration, 12-hour and 24-hour time, and elapsed time, interpreting timetables and planning activities effectively.
For Reading students examined how authors craft engaging narratives, exploring genre, author purpose, and themes. Through the Narrative Detective Challenge, they analysed figurative language, point of view, and descriptive detail, developing their ability to read critically and interpret author intent.
During Writing students revised their narrative writing skills, planning detailed stories with clear 4Ws and multiple complications. They used connectives, literary devices, and punctuation to enhance their writing, explored diary structure and indirect speech, and wrote from different points of view, focusing on strong conclusions and thoughtful reflections.
In preparation for our upcoming Camp to Sovereign Hill, Year 5 and 6 students have been exploring the history of the goldfields. They are learning about the experiences of those who arrived during the gold rush, comparing and contrasting the journeys of European and Chinese miners. Students are also developing their understanding of continuity and change, learning to define these concepts and identify examples of both in life on the goldfields. Year 4 students are learning about the early colonisation of Australia and its impact on people and the environment. They are exploring the causes and consequences of colonisation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, as well as for the new arrivals. Students are also examining how local communities changed during this time and considering the lasting effects of these changes on Australia today.
