Mathematics

In Maths, students have been learning to compare fractions using the terms greater than, less than, and equal to through engaging, hands-on activities that built both visual and practical understanding. We have now begun a revision unit on addition and subtraction, where students are revisiting key strategies such as the split strategy and the vertical strategy to strengthen their confidence and fluency when solving problems.

Reading

In Reading, students have continued working in their reading groups to practise key comprehension skills. We are still completing reading assessments to monitor each student’s progress and identify their next learning goals. Recently, we have been learning how to answer literal questions — questions where the answers are found directly in the text — and are practising using complete sentences when responding to comprehension questions to show a clear understanding of what we have read.

Writing

In Writing, students have been learning about the structure of a narrative and how each part helps to create an engaging story. They have explored the importance of including a clear orientation, build-up and dilemma, resolution, and ending to make their writing interesting and easy to follow. We are also learning how to use description to develop our characters and settings, using our five senses to show rather than tell the reader about what is happening. We have also briefly discussed the use of figurative language, such as similes, to make our writing more creative and engaging for the reader.
