Grade 1 Community News

Hello Grade 1 Families,
We are excited to share with you all the incredible learning that has been taking place in Grade 1 classrooms.
InitiaLit
In Weeks 3 and 4, we have been learning the new tricky words; always, animal, open, other, another and water. We also learnt how the letter c can make the sound /s/, the letter g can make the /j/ sound, -dge and -ge make the /j/ sound and -tch and -ch make the /ch/ sound. You can practice the new tricky words at home from here: 6:33
Here are our upcoming tricky words which you can practice at home!
For more practice, ask your child to write sentences using these words.
Maths
In week 3, students were learning how to measure volume using informal units. They continued to consolidate their knowledge on creating and using patterns and regrouping place value facts for two-digit numbers.
In week 4, students continued to build on their understanding of regrouping place value facts for two-digit numbers. They also learnt about sharing using arrays that had remainders. This skill is useful for understanding multiplication and division. Students also learnt to compare the mass of different objects using an equal-arm balance.
Next, students will begin learning about 2-digit addition algorithms, with regrouping. Students have already learnt to do this skill without regrouping and are ready to be introduced to regrouping.
You can support this learning at home by getting your child to sort numbers into equal groups and to create their own patterns.
Knowledge Building
This fortnight, our Grade 1 students have continued their exciting learning about fairy tales. We learnt about procedural texts and how it is important to include all steps within these texts so it is easy for people to follow along. The Grade 1 students also had the opportunity to plant their own beans in the classroom!
We also introduced our new topic for Knowledge Building, looking at Astronomy. In Astronomy, the students have been looking at space, the sun and the Earth. Students have also been practising identifying and writing their own exclamatory sentences.
Storybook
We have been reading the book “The Story of Ping” by Majorie Flack and “Harry by the Sea” by Gene Zion. Students have been practising retelling the stories in their own words to their peers, investigating which objects can float or sink and making their own boats.
Here are the new vocabulary words we have learnt from the books. It has been great to see our students use these words in their speaking and writing!
Respectful Relationships
In Respectful Relationships, students have been continuing to learn about help-seeking strategies and understanding when and how to ask for help. Students have had many opportunities to brainstorm and practice asking for help.
Story Champs
In Weeks 3 and 4, we practiced retelling "Martin Makes Friends” and "Mateo's Mosquito Bites.”
We begin by identifying the characters, setting, problem, action, feeling, solution and ending feeling.
Next we buddy up and verbally retell the story while incorporating the actions and gestures. Finally, we write the story together, then students draft their copy into their books.
Challenge your child to re-tell the stories from above with matching actions!
