French News

Bonjour, dear parents and students!
Over the past two weeks, our students have been doing some wonderful work in French, and we are so proud of them!
Here is a snapshot of what each year level has been working on in Week 3 and Week 4:
Prep students learnt how to use J’ai (I have) with family members and created their own family trees by pasting leaves for each member, including pet dogs and cats.
Students then revisited farm animals and their colours, this time describing them using Je vois (I see). They practised the new vocabulary on their whiteboards before working independently to complete a farm animal booklet featuring all the animals they have learnt.
Grade 1 students learnt to describe food using Je mange (I eat) + food. After practising their writing on whiteboards, they chose three different foods they had just learnt and drew them on an empty plate template, labelling each with a sentence starting with J’aime (I like) + food.
They then built on this vocabulary to describe foods they like and dislike, usingJ’aime(I like) and Je n’aime pas (I don’t like) to write full sentences in French independently in their books.
Grade 2 students learnt to ask and answer questions about different rooms in their house using Qu’est-ce que c’est ? (What is this?). They then drew a picture of their house and labelled the rooms in French.
They then built on their knowledge by asking and answering questions about the furniture in their bedrooms, continuing to use the question Qu’est-ce que c’est ? (What is this?). They drew a picture of their bedroom and labelled the furniture andcolours in French. To practise their speaking skills, students looked at each other’s pictures and asked Qu’est-ce que c’est?, responding in French with C’est… (This is…).
Grade 3 students revisited classroom objects, this time using the prepositions learnt in Weeks 1 and 2. They practised describing the objects with their colours, ensuring correct gender agreement, before drawing five classroom objects from their own classroom and writing five sentences to describe their location and their colours using prepositions.
Students then focused on French currency through a role-play dialogue to purchase stationery, building on the vocabulary introduced in Week 3.
Grade 4 students built on their learning from Week 2 by practising how to ask and answer questions about the weather. They then chose a city and researched the temperatures there for the week. After this, they carried out a dialogue with their table partners about the weather and temperatures in different cities, shared their findings, and recorded the information on their worksheets.
Next, students described the furniture and colours in either their bedroom or living room. They selected one room and wrote a paragraph detailing the furniture. Finally, they read their paragraphs aloud to their table partners, practising using a clear, confident public voice.
Grade 5 students learnt about metalanguage, focusing on how to construct French sentences and correctly identify the subject, object, adverb, adjective, and verb in a sentence. This lesson built on their previous learning of the futur proche (the future tense) from Week 2, and the independent task involved creating sentences using the futur proche along with adverbs.
Students then revisited letter combination sounds, an important preparation for their upcoming verbal assessment in Week 5. They practised their pronunciation verbally, both individually with their teachers and in groups, to build confidence.
Grade 6 students revisited letter combination sounds as a warm-up for their upcoming verbal assessment in Week 5. They practised pronouncing the sounds with their teachers, both individually and with their table partners, and then read a paragraph, applying the rules of liaison, silent consonants, and correct pronunciation.
Next, they focused on another verb tense, le passé composé, while also revisiting the verbs “to be” (être) and “to have” (avoir). This term’s focus is specifically on the verb “to have” (avoir) for the passé composé.
If you would like to do some revision at home with your children, in preparation for the upcoming verbal and written assessments, please feel free to use the resources provided above. For our lovely Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students, we have also included some songs below to help support memory retention.
A big bravo to all our wonderful students – we’re incredibly proud of you, and we look forward to seeing you all in the classroom!
Warm regards et à très vite,
Madame Ma, Mr Martins, Mr Zach and Miss Martine
