Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,

We’ve had a wonderful start to Term 4! Last week, our students enjoyed an exciting educational trip to Sovereign Hill, where they stepped back in time to experience life on the goldfields. The hands-on activities and historical reenactments helped bring our History learning to life and gave students a real sense of what life was like during the Gold Rush era.

We also celebrated a very successful Open Day, where students proudly shared their work and participated in a range of interactive learning stations. A special highlight was the poetry-writing station, where students and visitors collaborated to create imaginative, heartfelt poems. It was fantastic to see so many families involved and to witness the creativity and enthusiasm of our students.

Thank you for your continued support as we move further into the term — we’re looking forward to more exciting learning experiences ahead!

Remember, term 4, children must wear their TRPS Sun hat outside..

Mathematics

This term, our second topic will be Fractions, Decimals and Percentage. In this 12-lesson topic, students are introduced to percentages as 'out of 100', using visual aids such as hundredths grids and bar models. They convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages, solving problems and applying them to real-life contexts. This builds upon previous learning on fractions and decimals and introduces percentages for the first time.

Vocabulary

Over the past two weeks the students have been learning 5 new words each week from the novel and fluency reading passages. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They then use these words in their writing and reading.
