🌐 Cyber Safety Reminders for Families

As technology becomes a bigger part of our children’s lives, it’s important we continue to guide them in how to use it safely and responsibly. While the online world offers amazing opportunities for learning, creating, and connecting, it also comes with risks that children are not yet equipped to manage on their own.

Ā

Here are a few key reminders for families:

Ā

  • Personal information should never be shared online. Children should avoid sharing details such as their full name, school, address, photos, or information about their friends and family.
  • Primary school-aged children should not be on social media. Most platforms have age restrictions (usually 13+), and children simply aren’t developmentally ready to navigate these complex social spaces safely.
  • Keep technology out of bedrooms and bathrooms. Devices should be used in shared family areas where supervision and support are easier.
  • Be cautious of apps and platforms like Discord. These spaces can expose children to unmoderated and unsafe interactions and are not recommended for primary-aged students.
  • Teach children how to respond to online problems. Encourage them to report or block unwanted behaviour, and to always tell a trusted adult if something online makes them feel uncomfortable.

    Ā

The internet is a wonderful tool for learning and socialising, but children need ongoing support and guidance to use it safely. By keeping communication open and staying involved in their digital world, we can help ensure our children have positive and safe online experiences.
