Around the Junior School

Round Square Hero
The Junior School at Kinross Wolaroi School is buzzing with purpose as we embrace our Round Square Hero of Discovery, Sustainability Suki. Inspiring curiosity, responsibility, and action, Sustainability Suki has helped ignite a renewed commitment to sustainability across our school community. Students are stepping up with enthusiasm, eager to make a meaningful difference and reduce our environmental footprint.
Our initial focus is centred on two key areas: saving electricity and recycling. Classrooms are alive with energy as students take ownership - switching off lights, smartboards, and air-conditioning when not in use, and ensuring recycling bins are used thoughtfully and consistently. These small but powerful actions are quickly becoming daily habits, driven by a shared understanding that every choice matters.
Art at the Orange Show
You may have spotted Kinross' display in the schools zone at the Orange Show over the weekend. The Junior School were lucky enough to showcase some of their artworks. Amongst many and varied displays from schools all over, everyone's artworks were colourful and paid close attention to detail.
Pre-K Hillside Harvest Visit
Despite a wet start to the day, our excursion to Hillside Harvest was a wonderful experience for Pre-K. The excitement began the moment we hopped on the bus, which is always a big adventure. It was so lovely to be out in the fresh air as the children explored the orchard and enjoyed picking their own deliciously crisp and sweet Pink Lady apples straight form the trees. We also had a little walk around the farm to look at some of the machinery used for farming before enjoying morning tea near the Hillside Harvest shop. A great day out.
Snags, Votes and Second Counts: Year 6 Goes to the Polls!
Year 6 Democracy Day – Thursday, 30 April
Year 6 students embraced the democratic process during their engaging Democracy Day afternoon, held across Periods 5 and 6 on Thursday, 30 April.
Students participated in a preferential voting system to decide which fruit snack will accompany them on the upcoming Canberra excursion. Through this process, they developed a deeper understanding of how votes are cast, counted and redistributed in Australian elections. After a tightly contested count, apple was declared the winner on the second count, highlighting the importance of preferences in determining the final result.
This learning experience strongly complements Year 6’s History unit, Australia as a Nation, allowing students to apply their understanding of democratic systems in a practical and meaningful way. It also serves as valuable preparation for their Canberra excursion later this term, where students will further explore Australia’s system of government in action.
Following the vote, students enjoyed a well earned 'Democracy Snag', marking the occasion in true election day style.
Kinross Wolaroi School and Year 6 extend our sincere thanks to the Hon Mr Andrew Gee MP, who generously joined us for the afternoon. Mr Gee shared valuable insights into his experiences behind the scenes in Parliament as the current Independent Member for Calare, giving students a real-world perspective on leadership, decision-making and public service.
