Year 5/6 Cluster News

HOME INQUIRY:

Inquiry: Students are encouraged to continue exploring science at home by trying simple experiments and investigations with their families. Home experiments provide a wonderful opportunity for students to practise following the scientific method, make observations, ask questions, and share their discoveries with others.

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.

Mathematics: Working on general multiplication skills with the goal for automaticity of the facts up to x12

Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop:

In Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop, students are now planning and writing their own procedure texts by following the scientific method. They will apply features such as clear sequencing, imperative verbs, topic-specific vocabulary, headings, and detailed step-by-step instructions to communicate scientific investigations clearly and effectively. These skills will support students in designing and presenting their own experiments linked to our inquiry learning.

Mathematics:

Students have begun exploring fractions. We are investigating equivalent fractions through a range of hands-on and explorative activities designed to help students identify, compare, and represent fractions in different ways. Students are now also learning strategies for adding fractions, including using visual models and finding common denominators to solve problems accurately.

Inquiry: Students are continuing explore how scientific knowledge leads to new innovations. They will examine how advancements have changed the way we live, work, and communicate, and consider both the benefits and challenges that come with these developments. Throughout the unit, students will also explore how scientific thinking supports problem-solving and drives future innovation.
