Library News

News from the Library:

The library is open from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm each day. Students are invited to come to the space to enjoy the many books, games, and activities on offer. On Tuesdays, McCarthy’s Study Club is run in the library space from 3.15 pm - 4.15pm as well.

The library takes student requests for books, games, or activities, and we are always happy to help anyone find what they are looking for.  There is something for everyone to be found in our library space.

Library Programs:

In Term Two, the library programs are focusing on building our students' ability to discern information and apply their reading skills.

Year 8 HSIE Research classes are focused on reading text types. Classes are being led on how to break down information from textbooks and websites. Students are investigating the unique features of each text type and responding to these appropriately.

Year 7 are now building their Cultural Literacy with the Renaissance Reader program. We have been investigating texts focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and we are using these to build their knowledge about culture, its representation, and understanding of cultural practices. As students develop their knowledge, they will then focus on reading wider texts for enjoyment.

Year 8 have continued with the Renaissance Reader program and are now building their context knowledge, ready for their novel study in Term Three. Students have been introduced to World War Two and its representation in literature, and are developing their ability to use their understanding of history and its events to respond to texts. Students are investigating point of view in a variety of texts.

ANZAC Day and Library Displays:

In Week One, Year 9 and Year 10 HSIE classes were invited to the library to look at a range of items on display, kindly brought in by Mr Rob Meppem. The items were Mr Meppem’s grandfather’s items from his time on the Western Front in WWI.

Classes were invited to view the original maps, documents, photographs, jacket, and medals from Captain A. O'Connor. Seeing the items and learning about the reality of World War I with tangible evidence was a unique experience. We thank Mr Rob Meppem for sharing his family’s items with our students to build their knowledge and understanding of World War I.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2026:

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) for 2026 continues. We hope all the registered students are making progress with their reading goals.  Students are encouraged to use the McCarthy library catalogue to find materials that align with the PRC, and can always speak to our friendly library staff about their reading progress.

We will host a meeting with the registered students next week to discuss their reading progress.
