Maths Olympiad

We are incredibly proud of the Year 5 and 6 students who are participating in the APSMO Maths Olympiad this year. This week, students completed their first official competition paper, demonstrating perseverance, resilience and flexible mathematical thinking skills.
The APSMO Maths Olympiad is a problem-solving competition for students who demonstrate a passion for mathematics and enjoy the challenge of solving higher-order thinking problems. The competition encourages students to think critically, reason logically, and apply mathematical strategies in unfamiliar and complex situations.
Across the year, students will complete four official competition papers that focus heavily on problem-solving and reasoning. These tasks require students to think deeply, flexibly and try different approaches.
As part of their preparation for the Olympiad, our students participate in weekly extension lessons focused specifically on developing advanced mathematical problem-solving skills. During these sessions, students work collaboratively to solve rich mathematical tasks, explore multiple solution strategies and strengthen their ability to think flexibly and creatively. These lessons provide valuable opportunities for students to develop confidence when approaching challenging problems.
We especially congratulate our Year 5 students who undertook the competition for the very first time today. They should be incredibly proud of the way they approached the experience and for representing our school.
We are committed to providing opportunities that extend students and foster a love of learning. Programs such as the Maths Olympiad allow students to develop resilience, confidence and advanced problem-solving skills that support success across all areas of learning.
Congratulations to all students involved in completing their first official competition. We look forward to following their progress throughout the remainder of the Olympiad this year.
