Learning News - Term 2, Weeks 3-4

Maths

K/1

Over the past two weeks, our K/1 students have been busy exploring maths through hands-on learning activities focused on addition and length. Students practised using a variety of strategies to solve addition problems, including counting on, using materials and drawing pictures. They enjoyed participating in games and collaborative tasks that helped build confidence and fluency with adding numbers.

In our measurement lessons, students investigated length by comparing and ordering objects using informal units such as blocks, pop sticks and counters. They explored concepts including longer, shorter and equal length, while developing their mathematical language through practical activities around the classroom.

It has been wonderful to see students showing enthusiasm, persistence and teamwork as they continue to grow their mathematical understanding.

2/3C

It's wonderful to see the progress learners are making in mathematics! This term, we are focusing on bridging the gap between simple counting and more complex problem-solving. In Year 2/3C the curriculum shifts towardsa deeper understanding of place value, where students learn that the position of a digit (hundreds, tens, or ones) changes its value. The students have been developing mental strategies for addition and subtraction.

We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Ben Copland to our school community! Mr. Copland is joining the Year 2/3 classroom to complete his final teaching placement. This is a significant milestone in a teacher’s career, and we are excited to support him as he refines his skills and brings fresh, creative ideas to our students.

Data is the name of the game in 2/3M Maths! Our learners are becoming mini-statisticians as they learn to collect, organise, and make sense of information. We’re starting off with the basics: asking great survey questions and using tallies and frequency tables to keep track of everything. Then comes the fun part—bringing that data to life with colorful picture graphs, column graphs, and dot plots!

Year 4

Year 4 have launched themselves into our new unit 2D shapes and so far have explored the symmetry of faces and how shapes can be made of different shapes.  It’s quite tricky to make a regular shape, as we discovered, by combining regular shapes - much easier to make irregular shapes, but we persevered and had some breakthroughs!  Great work Year 4

Stage 3 has begun exploring our new unit on percentages and decimals. The children are enthusiastically developing their understanding of how percentages and decimals are used in everyday life through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks. Over the past week, it has been wonderful to see students build confidence, learn new skills and apply their mathematical thinking. Whether the class is calculating a discount at the shop or understanding how a batting average works. The children are learning to bridge the gap between fractions and their decimal equivalents.
