VCE VM Numeracy Excursion: The Amazing Race

In the final week of Term 2, our Year 11 and 12 VCE VM students came together to participate in an ‘Amazing race’ across Melbourne’s CBD.
Working in teams, students navigated their way through the city by following clues, interpreting maps, solving mathematical puzzles, and completing a range of challenges at various checkpoints.
The excursion provided students with the opportunity to apply their learning from VCE VM Numeracy in a real-world context within the area of Recreational Numeracy. Students practised reading and interpreting maps, using directional language and bearings, following written instructions, estimating distances, and applying problem-solving strategies whilst working collaboratively under time constraints. Mathematical and logic-based challenges throughout the event encouraged students to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply numeracy skills in practical situations.
The day was highly engaging and memorable, allowing students to step out of the classroom and explore the city in a safe and structured way. Even the teachers gave it a go!
We had excellent feedback from the event providers, who commented on how polite and respectful our students were. They should be extremely proud of themselves.
A huge congratulations to Team Orange for the overall win, to Team Black for putting their heart and soul into the challenges, and to Team White for their excellent teamwork and year-level win.
