Year 3 – 6 Literacy

One of the significant shifts Brunswick North Primary School has made this year in literacy is the introduction of dedicated daily time for sustained, attentive reading in Years 3–6.

Reading the same text together allows teachers to guide discussion, draw attention to important themes, and support students to think critically about complex ideas. Students are encouraged to actively engage with their texts by annotating, recording questions, highlighting important ideas, and making connections as they read. At the end of the year, students will be able to take their annotated books home, providing a lasting record of their thinking and learning.

This term, students in Years 3–4 have been reading The One and Only Ivan, exploring themes of animal freedom, unexpected friendships, and the responsibilities that come with having a voice. In Years 5–6, students have been reading A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning, examining resilience, adversity, and the author's distinctive dark, gothic tone.

Through these shared reading experiences, teachers are able to explicitly teach reading fluency, vocabulary, and complex sentence structures, while supporting students to develop deeper comprehension and a richer understanding of language and literature.
