Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs)

Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) are a group of common respiratory viruses that cause upper and lower respiratory tract illnesses. They primarily result in mild, cold-like symptoms, but can lead to more severe conditions like croup, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Key Facts About HPIVs

  • Symptoms: Usually begin 2 to 6 days after infection and include fever, runny nose, cough, sneezing, and sore throat.
  • Types: There are 4 distinct types. HPIV-1 and HPIV-2 are well known for causing croup in children, while HPIV-3 is a frequent cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
  • High-Risk Groups: While anyone can get infected, young children (under 5), older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for severe complications.
  • Transmission: Spreads through airborne droplets (coughs and sneezes) and by touching contaminated surfaces.

Treatment and Prevention

  • Treatment: There is no specific antiviral medication or vaccine for HPIV. Most infections resolve on their own, and recovery focuses on managing symptoms with rest, fluids, and fever-reducing medications. Croup can often be eased by breathing in cool, night air or steam.
  • Prevention: Standard hygiene practices are the best defense. This includes regular handwashing, avoiding touching your face, and maintaining distance from people who are visibly sick.

We still have a certain amount of Asthma plans that are not up to date or current.

To ensure we are following our duty of care for Asthmatic students, we ask that you follow these guidelines as soon as possible.

If we do not have an up to date plan / medication it can result in your child/ren not being able to attend excursions and camps for their safety.

You can find the school Asthma policy on the school website.
