World Ocean Day in Grade 2
The Grade 2 students celebrated World Ocean Day by dressing up in ocean colours and as their favourite sea creatures. Throughout the day, students learned about the importance of oceans as part of their Inquiry and Mathematics learning.
Students explored why oceans are so important, including their role in providing food, supporting employment, transporting goods, and influencing weather patterns around the world. They also learned about the impact that rubbish can have on ocean health.
We discussed how litter dropped on the ground can be washed into drains and waterways before eventually reaching the ocean. To investigate whether students as LPS could be directly contributing to this, students collected and recorded data about the different types of rubbish found around the school courtyard. They discovered that paper and cardboard were the most common types of litter present.
Students then considered ways to reduce rubbish in our school environment. Their suggestions included providing more bins around the school and encouraging students to bring nude food lunches to help reduce packaging waste.
It was a wonderful day of learning that helped students understand how their actions can contribute to healthier oceans and a cleaner environment.
