Staff Spotlight

Rory Dakers - Humanities Teacher
What school did you go to?
I’ve been to a few schools growing up, moving around NSW and QLD. But I finished my final years of schooling at Matthew Flinders on the Sunshine Coast.
What was your favourite subject at school?
Geography. I always enjoyed learning about the interconnections between people and places around the world and the factors that influence the development of countries.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Depends on when you asked me. Some of the main ones I can remember were chef, sports commentator and town planner.
If you weren’t a teacher, what would you choose to be?
Well, before teaching I did Asbestos removal, and that was exactly how you’d imagine. So, I’d go down the town planning pathway.
What is a current school trend that has you absolutely baffled?
Tough question. Maybe boys rolling the long sleeve shirts up when there is a short sleeve shirt available.
What would students be surprised to find out about you?
That I am approaching a decade of experience training, competing and teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but I often dislike the sport – so many injuries and men with personal hygiene issues! It’s also pretty embarrassing to participate in a sport where two grown men wrestle on the floor!
What are your must have smartphone apps?
CommBank, Strava, and the Digital ID app.
If you could make up a new national holiday that everyone must celebrate, what would it be?
Steven Bradbury Day – My all-time favourite Australian sporting moment.
What is your dream vacation?
A bike trip from the South to the North of Vietnam with a few good friends.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Sport, friends, and music.
