Kitchen Garden

It’s been another busy fortnight in the garden! Thank you LA12 for your help each week, and to everyone else who has been keen to help at recess and lunchtime whenever Jill is in the garden.
We have had a mysterious visitor stealing our sunflower seeds in the Kitchen Garden. Jill discovered it was not students taking the tasty treats, but a pair of rainbow lorikeets! While it was frustrating to see the sunflower heads being harvested (not by us!), it was a good indicator that the seeds were ripe. And who could deny this pair of rainbow lorikeets anything? It’s great to see they’re still calling our garden home, and we hope to have another chattering of chicks in the garden later this year. Jill has bagged the remaining flower heads for a kitchen garden class to harvest next term.
In sessions 1 & 2 last week all the Year 6 cohort came out into the garden, leaving the Year 5’s to quietly get on with their NAPLAN tests. We harvested tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber, rocket and herbs for families to take after school. The corn and pumpkins were put aside for storage or freezing until kitchen classes resume in term 2.
One bin of compost was ready to collect and use, and by the end of the day it was full of fresh plant material. Thank you to everyone who picked up buckets of rubbish from around the grounds and those who relocated the snails to the school boundary.
We would love some donations of clean eggs shells and coffee grounds. Please rinse the eggshells to remove any remaining egg, otherwise they go mouldy and can’t be used. They can be left on any bench in the kitchen.
Thank you!
Simone & Jill
