Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

Last weekend, we were proud to see many of our Year 6 students fully initiated through the Sacrament of Confirmation. The students involved conducted themselves with dignity and maturity during this important Catholic milestone.

Students counted how many times they could bump the ball with their head, then calculated fractions of wholes using their results.

With the onset of the Paris Olympics this week, Year 6 students have enjoyed learning about Olympic events through mathematical games, including marble archery, bouncy ball hurdles and balloon bump soccer. In addition to learning about fractions, students are gathering inspiration for a maths-based game that they will create and share with parents, beginning next Friday. We look forward to seeing the students share their learning and creativity with those of you who are able to attend. More details on the sessions can be found below.

Religious Education: Students have continued to learn about the Sacrament of the Eucharist and its connection with the Last Supper.

Mathematics:  Students have been learning about how to add fractions, how to multiply them through repeated addition, and how to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages. They have explored these skills by manipulating and interpreting the results of Olympics-inspired games. Next week, the students will complete two more of these Olympian maths games before creating a game of their own to share with parents. Parents are encouraged to attend one session on any of the three days listed below.

Dates/Times for parents:

Day 1 - Friday 9th August - 11.45 - 12.30

Day 2 - Monday 12th August  11.45 - 12.30

Day 3 - Wednesday 14th August - 11.45 - 12.30

English: Students have continued to read "Once" by Morris Gleitzman. It is a compelling novel that follows the journey of Felix, a young Jewish boy in Nazi-occupied Poland, as he searches for his parents. Through Felix's eyes, the story portrays the horrors of war while highlighting the resilience and hope of a child's spirit. This powerful narrative not only educates readers about historical events but also deeply touches their hearts.

To enhance their comprehension of "Once" and develop their note-taking and informative writing skills, students have also been learning and writing about the nation of Poland.

How can you support this at home?

Sharing what you know about World War 2 and the surrounding issues, is a great way to further engage with reading at home. Students often want to research or investigate this fascinating part of history.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL): Students continued to discuss gender norms this week. The students split into groups and were provided with fact cards about gender-based differences such as frequency of road incidents, percentage of judges and division of household chores. The students interpreted the data and shared their findings with the rest of the class.

Integrated Studies: The Footsteps Dance Program offers students the opportunity to develop their physical fitness, coordination, and self-expression through various dance styles. It encourages teamwork and boosts confidence as students learn and perform routines together. The Drama Program which continued this week, focuses on enhancing students' creativity, communication skills, and emotional intelligence through acting exercises.. Participating in drama activities allows students to explore different perspectives, build empathy, and improve their public speaking and improvisation skills.

Auslan: Learning Auslan (Australian Sign Language) enables effective communication with the Deaf community, fostering inclusivity and mutual understanding. It enhances cognitive abilities, such as memory and spatial awareness, while also improving non-verbal communication skills. Additionally, proficiency in Auslan can open up career opportunities in education, healthcare, and social services, where there is a growing demand for sign language interpreters and support workers.
