Maintaining motivation
It is normal at this point in the VCE for students to begin to lack motivation, the end seems so close, yet so far. Procrastination can creep in, and avoidance behaviours are observed.
Many students fall into the trap of thinking they must feel motivated before doing something or starting to study. An article from Melbourne University highlights that Psychological research shows the converse - it’s action that leads to motivation, which in turn leads to more action.
Below are a series of strategies to help students begin when they lack motivation:
- Break down big tasks into tiny steps. Taking one step at a time can help us focus and feel less overwhelmed. Online tools such as Goblin tools, can help students do this.
- Set specific, measurable, and time-limited goals. Beas clear as possible about what you want to achieve. Try to also set a clear end point, for example emailing the final essay to your teacher for marking.
- Remember that you don’t need to do it alone – join a study group or surround yourself with supportive friends who encourage (rather than distract!) and help you keep on track.
- Celebrate the small wins. Planning small rewards (a break or a treat) can help keep your spirits up. It can also make it easier to get back to studying.
- Prioritise self-care. Take time to recharge – schedule regular breaks, time to meet friends, and exercise. Sometimes a short walk can recharge your mind and you will begin completing the task quicker than expected.
- Recognise that sometimes, things are just tough to do but we must do them anyway. Sometimes studying will be boring and you don’t want to do it. Remind yourself of why you are doing it, what you want to achieve, or your purpose.
Remember when all else fails, do something, start!
