Prosocial behaviour – sense of community
One of the things that Shelford instils in its students is the importance of giving oneself to others and the wider community. Giving of oneself happens in many ways, and research suggests that acting in prosocial ways (doing things to benefit others or society as a whole) has many positive impacts. Being kind, supportive, and collaborative benefits other people and society, and it also has positive impacts on the individual displaying such behaviour (reduces stress and increases life satisfaction). Research suggests that spending money on others is one of the ways we can support the greater good and increase our life satisfaction. It is important to note that it is the acts of supporting, providing, and sharing with others in need that lead to a boost in our mood, rather than the amount of money given. Giving back to the wider community positively impacts our wellbeing in part because it provides a great sense of belonging, which is one of the important elements of overall wellbeing.
Research has shown that being a part of community (one or more) has a positive effect on mood, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. When people feel a sense of community, belonging, and help others, it benefits both the givers and the receivers. Being part of something greater than ourselves and supporting the greater good has many benefits – support, care, and generosity represent the best and most wholesome elements of humanity.
This year, Shelford is encouraging students and other members of the school community to connect with something bigger than themselves through Connor’s Run and REACH Siem Reap. These two initiatives invite our students to unite in support of important causes and values such as courage, hope, education, health, and collaboration for the greater good.
Being part of an inclusive and supportive school community like Shelford is a valuable way of fostering our sense of belonging and wellbeing; however, challenging ourselves to give our time and support more broadly brings even greater benefits. We encourage students and families/carers alike to consider the other opportunities in which they can experience a sense of care, support, generosity, and community.
