Mathematics News

Hello Mathematicians,
As we move into the second half of Term 4, it is essential that students remain focused and committed right through to the end of the school year. The final weeks are an important opportunity to consolidate learning, strengthen understanding, and finish the year with confidence. Staying organised and maintaining positive learning habits now will make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and productive end to 2025.
A calm, prepared, and focused classroom environment begins with preparation. Students are expected to arrive at every lesson fully equipped with all essential supplies: a scientific calculator, pens, pencils, rulers, glue sticks, workbooks, and a well-stocked pencil case. A scientific calculator is a vital tool for Mathematics and can be purchased from the school office if required. Arriving prepared is non-negotiable - it maximises learning time and minimises disruptions. Packing school bags the night before is a simple but effective way to support success. We thank families for their continued support in encouraging responsibility and high standards. If you have any concerns or require assistance with supplies, please contact your child’s Year Advisor.
Term 4 Assessment Tasks
This term, many Mathematics topics are being informally assessed. Instead of sitting formal exams, students will demonstrate their understanding through classwork, discussions, participation, and smaller in-class tasks. These informal assessments allow teachers to gauge student progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed.
Consistent effort and engagement remain crucial—students’ day-to-day participation directly contributes to their learning success.
Topics:
Year 7 – Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Angles; Probability (Informally Assessed)
Year 8 – Indices; Rates and Ratios; Data Analysis; Properties of Geometrical Figures (Informally Assessed)
Year 9 – Numbers of Any Magnitude; Indices A; Data Analysis A; Properties of Geometrical Figures A, B, and C (Informally Assessed)
Year 10 – Indices B and C; Introduction to Networks; Area and Surface Area B; Volume (Informally Assessed)
Year 11 Students
For Year 11, staying organised and proactive will help students manage their workload and approach assessments with confidence.
✅ Revision materials will be provided in class, with extra support and resources available on CANVAS.
✅ Students who miss a lesson—particularly during revision—must take responsibility for catching up on missed work.
✅ Begin revision early to reduce stress and improve results.
✅ Bring a scientific calculator to every lesson and assessment—borrowing one cannot be guaranteed.
Upcoming Senior (Yr 11) Assessments (Week 9):
Numeracy: Investigative Assignment
Standard 1/2: Skills and Application Task
Advanced: Investigative Assignment
Extension: Investigative Assignment
We encourage parents and guardians to refer to the Assessment Booklet provided earlier this year for more details. Students should also record all due dates in their planners to avoid last-minute stress.
Need Extra Help?
Homework Club runs every Thursday afternoon from 2–3pm. This is an excellent opportunity for students to receive additional support, revise concepts, and ask for guidance in a relaxed setting.
Let’s make the final weeks of the year productive, positive, and successful. Stay organised, keep revising regularly, ask questions, and aim for your personal best - we’re proud of the effort and perseverance you continue to show.
Warm regards, The Mathematics Faculty
